Robotic surgery is on the rise globally with many of the world’s leading medical device companies investing heavily in product development. The latest robotic devices offer superhuman dexterity, provide surgery that is far less invasive, reduce pain to the patient, and mean shorter hospital stay.
Titan Medical and Intuitive Surgical are two companies that have recently launched new surgical robots to the market. Robotic surgery is set to continue growing in the coming years with prices of the latest devices falling as more institutions around the world adopt them.
An interesting collaboration between Johnson & Johnson and Google is promised for the future.
In every industry, cost is always a factor that impacts the adoption of a new technology and it’s no different for robotic surgery. A number of companies including Titan and Intuitive are making significant progress in reducing the cost of their latest robotic devices making them more affordable.
Intuitive Surgical’ s latest model the da Vinci X will be released later this year and it provides a lot of the same features included in the more advanced da Vinci XI but at a more affordable price point. The lower price is most significant for markets outside the US as they tend to be more price sensitive. In some countries, the da Vinci XI was viewed as simply being too expensive.
Titan’s Sports Surgical System is another model that aims to make robotic surgery more accessible. Their device is very similar to Intuitive’s and it allows surgery to be performed with minimal impact to a patient and it’s suitable for a wide range of procedures including abdominal, gynaecological and urological surgery.
In March 2015 – Johnson & Johnson announced that Ethicon, a medical device company in the Johnson & Johnson family of companies, has entered into a collaboration with Google, Inc., “working with the Life Sciences team on advancing surgical robotics to benefit surgeons, patients and health care systems”.
“This collaboration with Google is another important step in our commitment to advancing surgical care, and together, we aim to put the best science, technology and surgical know-how in the hands of medical teams around the world.”
Google and Johnson & Johnson are referring to their new surgical system as ‘digital surgery’ and expect it to cost far less than Intuitive Surgical’s da Vinci – making these state of the art systems more attainable.
As technology advances robots will become more adaptable and will have the potential to perform an increased amount of functions, including diagnostics and patient monitoring. These advancements could free up valuable time for medical practitioners and therefore lead to increased productivity and a better level of care for patients.
Trulife has designed an innovative product – the Elite Trendelenburg Positioning System – to support the continued growth in robotic surgery.
James Toland Senior R&D Engineer “Trulife is fully committed to getting behind the latest developments in robotic surgery and we have designed an innovative system to support its growth. Patient care and safety is at the core of everything we do and our new Trendelenburg System provides highly effective pressure care for patients, thus reducing the chance of injury during surgery. This latest product has been developed specifically for robotic-assisted surgery, abdominal surgery and gynaecological surgery.”
Our Elite Trendelenburg Positioning System tackles a number of serious issues that occur when performing surgery in the Trendelenburg position; including nerve damage, patient slippage and decubitus sores.
Our engineers have designed this system to include a supportive and comfortable mixture of gel and foam providing outstanding comfort for the patient. The system includes shoulder supports produced from a cutting-edge carbon composite that provides extra support, and safety during deeper surgical procedures.
Growth in this area is set to continue and it is estimated that by 2020, surgical robotics sales may double in size to $6.4 billion.
